COMMON POOL PROBLEMS

Recognizing the Signs Your Pool Needs Attention

Pool problems rarely appear all at once. Most issues start as small symptoms — a change in water clarity, an unusual sound from the pump, or a heater that takes longer than usual to warm up. Here are the diagnostic indicators our technicians commonly encounter in Napa Valley.

Circulation

Poor Circulation

Weak return jets, uneven water movement, or spots that never seem to clear can indicate a pump, valve, or plumbing issue affecting how water moves through the system.

Cloudy water

Cloudy or Hazy Water

Persistent cloudiness that doesn't respond to chemical adjustments often points to a filtration problem — a dirty or damaged filter, an undersized pump, or inadequate run time.

Noisy pump

Noisy or Struggling Pump

Grinding, rattling, or cavitation sounds from the pump pad are early warning signs. Catching pump problems early usually means a repair rather than a full replacement.

Heater issue

Heater Not Performing

A heater that won't ignite, cycles off quickly, or fails to reach set temperature may have an ignition, sensor, or flow-rate issue worth diagnosing before the cold season arrives.

Filter issue

Filter Pressure Problems

Pressure that climbs too fast between cleanings — or stays unusually low — often signals a filter media issue, an air leak, or debris load that's overwhelming the system.

Automation fault

Automation Faults

Schedules that don't run, valves that won't turn, or control panels that display errors can disrupt the entire pool system. Most automation issues can be diagnosed and corrected on-site.

Lighting issue

Lighting Problems

Flickering, dimming, or non-functional pool lights may indicate a bulb failure, a niche seal leak, or a wiring concern that should be evaluated by a qualified technician.

Cleaner malfunction

Cleaner Not Working Properly

If an automatic cleaner is missing sections of the pool, getting stuck, or stopping mid-cycle, the issue may be in the cleaner itself or in the suction and return flow supporting it.

VALVES & PLUMBING

Valve and Plumbing Component Concerns

Valves, unions, and fittings are the connective tissue of a pool system. A stuck diverter valve, a weeping union, or a fitting that's lost its seal can quietly affect circulation, water levels, or heater performance — sometimes for weeks before the cause is obvious.

Our technicians check accessible valves and plumbing components as part of equipment diagnosis. If visible plumbing components show wear, improper positioning, or signs of leaking around unions or equipment pads, we document our findings and explain the recommended repair.

A note on leak detection: We evaluate accessible plumbing components and fittings as part of standard equipment diagnosis. We do not currently offer underground or structural leak detection services. If you suspect a structural or underground leak, we will let you know and can advise on next steps.

REPAIR VS. REPLACEMENT

Honest Recommendations — Repair or Replace?

Not every failing piece of equipment needs to be replaced right away. And not every repair is worth making on aging equipment. Our technicians provide straightforward assessments so you understand the trade-offs before committing to either option.

When Repair Makes Sense

  • The equipment is relatively recent (typically within its expected service life)
  • The fault is isolated — a capacitor, seal, sensor, or board — not a systemic failure
  • Repair cost is reasonable relative to replacement cost
  • The rest of the system is in good working order
  • The homeowner is not yet planning an equipment upgrade or remodel

When Replacement Is Worth Considering

  • The equipment is at or past its typical lifespan
  • Repair costs approach or exceed a significant share of replacement cost
  • Energy-efficient alternatives (variable-speed pumps, modern heaters) would offer meaningful savings
  • Repeated repairs on the same component suggest systemic wear
  • An upcoming remodel or equipment upgrade makes replacement the practical choice

We will tell you which category your equipment falls into — and give you the information you need to make a confident decision.

CATCH PROBLEMS EARLY

Regular Service Is the Best Early-Warning System

Most pool repairs become more involved — and more expensive — when they go unnoticed for weeks. Equipment that's serviced and observed on a regular schedule gives your technician the chance to identify developing issues before a pump burns out, a filter fails, or a heater stops working at the wrong time of year.

Our weekly pool service includes a visual equipment check at every visit. When a technician notices something that warrants attention — rising pressure, unusual sounds, a leak at a fitting — they document the concern and communicate it to you before the next service cycle.

Consistent weekly service doesn't just keep your pool clean. It keeps small repairs from becoming large ones.
